1. The Traditional Site: The Cenacle (Upper Room)

Christian tradition going back to at least the 4th century identifies the Cenacle as the place where Jesus held the Last Supper.

What’s there today?

  • A stone upper room on Mount Zion, just outside the Old City walls

  • A Crusader-era structure (12th–13th century) built over a much older site

  • Beneath it is a Jewish holy site traditionally connected to King David’s Tomb

Why Christians accept it as the traditional location:

  • Early Christian pilgrims (4th century onward) were directed to this spot

  • The site was preserved by Byzantine, Crusader, and later Christian communities

  • It fits the biblical description: an upper room in Jerusalem, prepared for Passover.
